Modern capitalism is built on a binary opposition between ‘useful’ and ‘wasted’ lives: between those who serve the capitalist system and those excluded from it. Given the strong connections between social and material processes, it is no surprise that those living ‘wasted’ lives also often live with, on and off waste. This brief Wastiary chapter seeks to provide an alternative perspective from Latin America through decolonial theory and cartonera literature.
